The reality is, we cannot have a discussion about the Autistic Spectrum if we do not first understand that the”spectrum” is about child development and developmental delays. The struggle here is that these diagnostic markers are not always quick and easy to pinpoint early on. Kids present symptoms in many ways and there is often (with kids on the spectrum) a mental health/emotional component that can mask the underlying developmental delays. This can so often delay diagnosis and therefore delay any prevention or intervention services. So, I am going to spend several posts on this part of Jessica’s story. Remember, I am a therapist professionally, so this stuff fascinates me and I work with kids 5-22. As a clinician, I can tell you that child development is complex and widespread. I also find the theories and milestone markers to be overall pretty consistent and a good marker for parents. There are some very influential developmental theorists that I particularly like and there are ones that have influences the world of Psychology for many years. I will try to mask my clinical nerd qualities and share in a manner that is as user-friendly as possible. I will share some links for those of you interested in more detail, but my goal is to be brief in content of the clinical stuff and really share how it has related to my experience of and with Jessica. Stay tuned as I start this part of the journey.
Notice I am starting a resource list on my site. If you have resources you would like aded, that you feel are beneficial to the parents and families with kids on the spectrum, please contact me and share your resource so I can add it to the list.
